Quail Street Park Stormwater Improvements

The City of Lakewood acquired the 9-acre Quail Street Park, located at 1960 Quail St., in 2024 from Denver Water. This new neighborhood park provides much needed park space in Ward 1. A portion of the park was originally leased to the city from Denver Water and included a new playground and safety surface that was designed by the neighborhood and constructed in 2022.

Thanks to the recent acquisition, the City is preparing for the next phase of vital improvements to the park. Stormwater improvements on the east side of park include a detention basin to provide water quality and mitigate flooding downstream of the park. The basin will contain a channel that seamlessly integrates with the park, remains dry during normal conditions, and will only flow during storm events. The water basin will provide relief from flooding in the park and mitigate identified flooding issues along West 20th Avenue and in the adjacent neighborhood. Construction is anticipated to begin late 2025 or early 2026 and will take several months to complete.

This phase of development will also include park enhancements including a paved loop trail, better connectivity throughout the park and existing playground, new trees and enhanced landscaping. The park will retain a large open lawn area for passive uses or pick-up play. Future phases of park development could include new amenities and will occur following a community engagement process and as funding allows. View the site plan for more details.

Quail Street Park Playground

The new playground at Quail Street Park was completed in May 2022. City staff hosted a public meeting on Aug. 1, 2019, to better understand residents' desired amenities for the new playground. Staff reviewed meeting results and survey responses to determine appropriates uses and amenities, resulting in a site plan for the park that also includes a new sidewalk along Quail Street.

  • Share Hello! We are very excited about this project. Thank you for all your work so far. We live at 1945 Owens 🇺🇸 Court directly adjacent to the project. Can you please share how far the walking path will be from our fence line? Currently people already walk on this grass Ridge or what previously was. We have had dirt bikes and really disruptive situations with the path that close. We are very excited to view the path, however! Thank you so much again and looking forward to hearing from you soon. on Facebook Share Hello! We are very excited about this project. Thank you for all your work so far. Hi there,

Great question. We are anticipating the trail will be approximately 15-20 feet from your property line. With a formal concrete path, hopefully this will be much less disruptive.  Please let us know of additional concerns.

  • Share The developed side of the park is beautiful the way it is. Why don’t you focus on the large area to the North that is all dead grass and weeds? The corner on 20th and Quail? That area has no trees or water. Also. Many people walk their dogs there, some off leash despite the postings that leashes are required. What about a small dog park? Lots of us have been talking about even trying to privately fund it if allowed. on Facebook Share The developed side of the park is beautiful the way it is. Thank you for your feedback! I have shared this with the project team. This project will include a trail loop and new trees as well as an open field for passive uses and dog waste stations. A formalized dog park is not in the plans at this time for phase one and we will continue to take feedback for consideration when funding is available for future phases!
