Quail Street Park Stormwater Improvements
The City of Lakewood acquired the 9-acre Quail Street Park, located at 1960 Quail St., in 2024 from Denver Water. This new neighborhood park provides much needed park space in Ward 1. A portion of the park was originally leased to the city from Denver Water and included a new playground and safety surface that was designed by the neighborhood and constructed in 2022.

Thanks to the recent acquisition, the City is preparing for the next phase of vital improvements to the park. Stormwater improvements on the east side of park include a detention basin to provide water quality and mitigate flooding downstream of the park. The basin will contain a channel that seamlessly integrates with the park, remains dry during normal conditions, and will only flow during storm events. The water basin will provide relief from flooding in the park and mitigate identified flooding issues along West 20th Avenue and in the adjacent neighborhood. Construction is anticipated to begin late 2025 or early 2026 and will take several months to complete.
This phase of development will also include park enhancements including a paved loop trail, better connectivity throughout the park and existing playground, new trees and enhanced landscaping. The park will retain a large open lawn area for passive uses or pick-up play. Future phases of park development could include new amenities and will occur following a community engagement process and as funding allows. View the site plan for more details.

The proposed Quail Street Park playground has a little something for everyone! Decorative rubber safety surfacing provides accessibility for all ages and abilities. For the two to five age group, a toddler swing, climber and spinner offer stimulation, coordination and strength challenges.
For older children, and the younger crowd looking for a challenge, the ‘Tree Tops’ structure offers abstract play structure giving kids the sense of exploring a forest canopy branch by branch. Beyond the normal ups and downs of traditional tree climbing, kids can also navigate their way across wiggly bridges, crawl through a 3-ring climber, roar down two different slides and so much more. The new playground will offer a range of interconnected activities at multiple levels that will spark hours of imaginative and energetic play, all protected by plenty of built-in shade.
Two belt swings and a seesaw provide fun activities for one or more kids to promote experimentation with balance.
Final improvements to the park will include a concrete pathway to access the playground, and multiple benches and picnic tables for relaxing and small family gatherings. Construction is set for the spring, 2021.
