Consultation has concluded

Morse Park Playground was completed in May 2022

The original "Lakewood Park," Morse Park, located at 8180 W. 20th Ave., is a lovely mature park that dates from before city incorporation.

Funding is now available to replace the outdated playground. The project team is seeking feedback on playground amenities residents would like to see at Morse Park. Please take the online survey below by May 20.

Based on the survey results, a draft plan for the playground will be posted on this page for feedback from residents. Playground improvements:

  • Meet the budget allocated for all work required including removing the existing equipment
and installing new equipment and playground surface.
  • Provide play equipment that meets safety requirements established by the U.S. Consumer
Product Safety Commission and the Handbook for Public Playground Safety.
  • Provide a variety of play structures and components encouraging activities inclusive of
    multiple age groups.
  • Meet current American with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements, replace existing rubber surfacing with a new, fully-accessible protective surface.

Lakewood secured funding through the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. CDBG provides annual grants on a formula basis to states, cities and counties to develop viable urban communities. Visit Lakewood.org/CDBG to learn more.

Is this necessary? It seems a pretty great playground already.

Mom henry asked almost 3 years ago

This playground is beyond it's useful life and was up for replacement on our equipment replacement schedule. In addition, the surfacing is failing and needs to be replaced. Thank you for your feedback.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to share our hopes and desires! I know our kiddo and the many others in the neighborhood will be thrilled to have a better playground. Will there be longer slides put in? Is there any way a bathroom can be put in closer to the play equipment?

Kristin asked almost 3 years ago

We have heard many requests for slides, a slide will be included in the draft site plan coming soon! Bathrooms are not funded with this project but we will put a bathroom on the project list for future consideration as funding allows.

Is there any plan for a cross walk at 20th and Allison? Or 20th and Brentwood. There is no good way to get across 20th for all the families that live on the north side of 20th and east of Carr unless you walk the bike lane on 20th which can be dangerous for kids and family with cars going fast down 20th

Tjd asked almost 3 years ago

Thank you for your feedback! Unfortunately a crosswalk is not included in this project. Lakewood Public Works and Traffic would consider crosswalks. I will send a message over to traffic as we have heard several requests through this project for a crosswalk! To submit a request for a crosswalk, visit https://www.lakewood.org/Government/Departments/City-Managers-Office/Communications/Request-Lakewood-service-request-FAQ(External link).

Will there be slides? The 6 amenities that were included in the survey seem to have to do with spinning, climbing, swinging, and exercise... the roller slide is fine, but would not be great for older kids. Will the play set be limited to the items in the survey, or are there components that are not shown that will be included?

GRANITTOGIRL asked almost 3 years ago

Thank you for your feedback. We have received several comments regarding slides and will incorporate into the draft site plan. The survey included several play equipment components to give our project team a picture of what is desired by the neighborhood. The draft site plan will take into account what we've heard along with other components to pull the playground together. Look to this page for a draft site plan coming soon. There will also be the opportunity to provide feedback on the site plan.

Are there going to be any regular slides?

MonicaG asked almost 3 years ago

There is a roller slide proposed and we have received many comments regarding slides. We will look to incorporate a slide in the draft site plan coming soon!

Why do we need exercise equipment on a children’s playground?

MonicaG asked almost 3 years ago

Thank you for your comments! Exercise equipment is very popular at Lakewood playgrounds. It is also a master plan goal that we try to incorporate where we can. Exercise equipment will be considered for Morse Park only if that option rises to the top of the survey responses.

I am reaching out as we are in the neighborhood and very excited about this project. We are at 22nd and Allison and when walking to the park there is no crosswalk which makes it very dangerous to cross 20th. Is this in the project to help make our park safer by putting in a crosswalk at 20th and Allison to let the neighborhood safely get to the park? Thanks Anamarie Nall 336-688-9450 2240 Allison St.
