Porter Park today
The site plan for Porter Park is now approved and the project team is preparing for construction in early 2027 as weather allows.
Located at 731 Tabor St., Porter Park is a 7.7-acre property purchased in 2021 by the city to provide much needed park space in Ward 1.
To honor the legacy of the Porter family, the park is named after Daniel Wilson Porter and Phyllis Porter. Daniel and Phyllis owned this property and had a love for farming and preservation; Daniel became a master gardener late in life. The Porter family desired the city carry on the farming tradition on the property, with a farming element in the future park that would serve the Lakewood community. The city agreed to incorporate an agriculture theme, and as always, is committed to sustainability. Nearby residents can anticipate lots of open space, native plantings and modest amenities in their new neighborhood park.
Demolition of the existing structures on the site occurred in early 2023. The development of the site was initially funded in the city's five-year Capital Improvement Plan Budget in 2025-2026, but has been delayed to start construction in 2027 due to resource constraints.
Residents have provided feedback and helped create a vision for the new park through a two- year community engagement process to develop a final site plan. The site plan is now approved and includes a loop trail, open lawn area, nature playground, community garden and a pollinator garden. In addition, the project was awarded a Community Development Block Grant to support the development of the site!
