Goal #3. Respond to community needs through the addition of new facilities and amenities.

The Imagine Lakewood! resident survey, public open houses and other meetings revealed that Lakewood residents would like to see some new facilities added to Lakewood's portfolio.

  • 70% said there are too few community gardens
  • 66% there are two places for dogs to exercise off leash
  • 60% said there are two few water spray parks
  • When asked the most important issues for the City to address, 44% of residents said "new facilities". Included in that group are more dog parks, more pools and a new recreation or community center.

To achieve this goal, we will:

a. Expand Lakewood’s community garden program and support the Comprehensive Plan and Sustainability Plan goals for access to local and healthy food.

b. Assess the feasibility of adding a destination pool and recreation facility to the City's resources.

c. Evaluate the opportunity to add water amenities to existing facilities and parks.

d. Expand opportunities for sanctioned off leash dog experiences.

e. Explore opportunities and interest levels in various funding options for large scale capital projects and land acquisition.

f. Expand the City's outdoor fitness equipment inventory.

g. Continue to implement established department site and facility plans.

If new facilities are being considered, an ice rink would be a good choice. There is no ice rink in this vicinity that offers year round public skating. North, south, and east parts of town all have ice rinks, but there is nothing remotely close to Lakewood that caters to the public.

I think the addition of dog parks is absurd for the following reasons: 1) People do not clean up after their dogs.2) Dog parks are expensive to maintain especially given potential liability for accidents.3) People do not control their dogs and it ends up being a place where only people with aggressive dogs go. 4) What do you mean by sanctioned? If that means only owners are present and responsible for supervising their dogs and not the cleaning up the area then how do you propose to manage these areas?5) Name any municipalities that are not having problems with off-leash areas?6) Off leash areas scare off other wildlife . For instance the area by Chatfield Reservoir below the dam used to have a lot of deer along the river. Not anymore since the park was created.

I think teaching children how to garden hands on could be beneficial but also getting another action center that accepts donations and encourages all local businesses to donate there trash rather than take it to a landfill. My son loved gardening at renaissance and visiting the local corn maze on field trips. Making your own food leads to independence

Please add a community garden in Jefferson Green Park. I think that would be an excellent location.
