We want to hear from you
As a neighboring resident to the Beech Park dog off leash area, we are asking for your feedback on this park space. The City of Lakewood has received requests for mitigation of the conflict between dogs enjoying this space and cyclists and pedestrians cutting through the off leash area. There have been reports of close calls and accidents due to this interaction and the steep grades of the site.

Background
Several mitigation strategies are in place including signage, fencing, repeated closure of social trails other than the two perimeter trails and education by parks staff. The city has received requests to close the area to bikes allowing only dogs, while others have enjoyed the short cut to William F. Hayden Park or teaching their kids how to ride in the park. It is important to note, this location is not suitable for a completely fenced in dog park due to storm water regulations.

Next Steps
We would like to facilitate a neighborhood conversation about the future of this space. Please share your comments, ideas or ask a question by May 31. Subscribe to this page for updates.

Great question! As this off leash area is not considered a dog park by City of Lakewood standards (not enclosed) and is managed by the City, not Jefferson County, it does not fall under Jeffco's regulations. Those regulations are best practices and would apply to a formal dog park in Lakewood. Unfortunately this area is not a feasible formal dog park location due to storm water regulations.

That being said, the city is looking for feedback to best understand the neighborhood's desires for the future of this space even if that means leaving it as is with further conflict mitigation strategies.

We are seeking general feedback as to whether we should remove the opportunity for bikes in the off leash dog area or ask dogs be kept on a leash. Appreciate your input! Feel free to leave a comment or ask another question. We are also seeking creative ideas on the Ideas tab. Thanks!
