Existing playground at Addenbrooke Park

Addenbrooke Park, 601 S. Garrison St., received a new playground in 2020!

In September 2019, a request for proposals to renovate the playground at Addenbrooke Park
resulted in 15 options for consideration from eight playground vendors. The options
varied in terms of size, components and play activities that would best fit within the existing
concrete curb that defines the play area to be renovated. All options addressed the need to meet
current Americans with Disabilities (ADA) requirements, including the removal of the existing pea gravel on- -site and the installation of poured-in-place or rubber surfacing appropriate for wheelchair accessibility.

After review, staff selected five options for residents consideration. Criteria used to compare the
submittals included the following:

  • Meeting the budget allocated for all work required including removing the existing equipment
and installing new equipment and surfacing.
  • Providing play equipment that meets safety requirements established by the U.S. Consumer
Product Safety Commission and the Handbook for Public Playground Safety.
  • Providing a variety of play structures and components encouraging activities suitable for
    multiple age groups.

The Addenbrooke Park playground renovation is funded in part by a Neighborhood Participation Program
(NPP) grant submitted by the Sun Valley Neighborhood Association and approved by Lakewood
City Council. The NPP gives community organizations a chance to submit applications to receive city funding for a small-scale project they believe would make a difference in improving their neighborhoods. Learn more at Lakewood.org/NPP.

As an interested neighbor and playground visitor, we are asking for your input by Nov. 25 to select a playground option for Addenbrooke Park. Please be aware that the colors shown are not necessarily the colors that will be used. Colors will be selected to blend in with the surrounding natural open environment.

The playground is scheduled to be renovated beginning in the spring of 2020.

Thank you for your interest and participation!
