Why are we talking about Site Design and Community Context?

Site design refers to the size and placement of buildings on a site. This includes building height, distance from other structures, proximity to the street, and site improvements such as sidewalks, driveways, landscaping, signs and more. Quality site design and planning are critical to the image and function of Lakewood. Site planning is used to determine how buildings and other improvements fit within the context of their setting.

Over the past few months we collected input on a range of related issues including the following:
  • Concerns with site design for larger buildings, including building height and relationship to the street
  • Examples of good and poor site design
  • Potential for community amenities through site design (public plazas, open meeting spaces, retail areas)
  • Potential site planning requirements that promote sustainability (solar access, tree canopy, water conservation, water quality)
