The City of Lakewood is in the process of conducting a comprehensive review of a proposed dog park location and want your input.

Background
Additional dog parks in Lakewood have been identified as a top priority for residents through the Imagine Lakewood! master planning effort as well as through a recent survey of Lakewood residents. Dog parks are shown to reduce off-leash dog violations and dog waste in other city parks. With only one community dog park, Lakewood has fewer dog parks when compared to other cities in the metro area.

Location
Located at the intersection of the Bear Creek Greenbelt and Wadsworth Boulevard at 2951 S. Wadsworth Blvd., the proposed Bear Creek Dog Park would also incorporate a new parking area and trailhead for the Bear Creek Greenbelt following a recent park acquisition. Improvements to the park could include up to 8 acres of the site dedicated to a fenced, off-leash dog park and trail connections.

Next Steps
In order to facilitate a community conversation about the proposed dog park at Bear Creek Greenbelt at Wadsworth Boulevard, please share your comments, take the survey below and ask a question by Tuesday, September 27.

    Ty asked 13 days ago

    Hi Ty,

We apologize for the delay. The reason for inactivity is for several favorable reasons. The city was able to acquire an additional parcel adjacent to Wadsworth Blvd. that allows us to shift the park further east and provide a better trail connection to the existing Bear Creek Trail. Additionally, we are working with Colorado Parks and Wildlife on the design as well as the Colorado School of Mines. The Colorado School of Mines is investigating design methods and materials to make this dog park as efficient as possible. The final Mines report will be provided to staff in the next few weeks. Once we have incorporated their design suggestions, we can proceed to permitting review. This process may take several months, but the project team wants to ensure we get this new community dog park and trailhead right!

    Thank you for your question.

    Hi there,

The nearest prairie dog colony resides north of the proposed dog park. While you may see prairie dogs from time to time across the park, the "home base" is carefully observed and tracked by staff on a regular basis.  Staff continues to work with Colorado Parks and Wildlife to ensure we are respecting existing wildlife impacts in the greenbelt with any modifications.

We will post the refined concept following internal reviews by engineering, planning, storm water, etc., as well as Colorado Parks and Wildlife. At that time we will ask for comments and additional feedback on the proposed project/trailhead and location.

Tell us more! What do you feel is most important in a dog park? We are in preliminary conceptual design considering a dog park in this location and want to hear what is most important to residents. Be sure to take the survey, that also asks you to rank park amenities that are important to you by September 23.

    What would "shelter amenities" include?

DogINTO asked over 1 year ago

We are in the conceptual phase and seeking pubic input prior to delving into design details, but we know that shade is important in any park and will likely include a shelter with picnic tables and places of respite for park visitors.

Great question! Staff is currently researching surfacing options that are both cost-effective and easy to maintain. A common trend is to leave some portions of a park grass, plant trees/etc., allow for some portions to have a natural surface, and utilize crusher fines or pea gravel, which is easy to maintain. While additional study needs to occur prior to any new park development, there are several options that will be considered.

    Hi there,

This project is in the preliminary design phase with the first step requesting public feedback through this project phase. The conceptual site plan provided on this site is the design currently available. When we close the survey Sept. 23, staff will reconvene to discuss next steps including environmental review and preplanning with the Lakewood Development Review team for a site plan review. This includes a review of engineering, traffic, drainage, storm water, fire, etc. Please subscribe to this project page for future updates!

  • Share I look forward to a new and improved off leash dog park. This location has been a potential location for a dog park for many years. With the acquisition by the City of the old veterinary office on Wadsworth, the existing deceleration lane, and space availability for a trail connection, parking lot,  and formalized trail head, we felt the Wadsworth location the most accessible. Great question!

These are common concerns and great points for us to include in the new management plan.
