As part of the Comprehensive Plan update process, the city is excited to take the next step in developing the Comprehensive Plan by collaborating with community members, Planning Commission, and stakeholders in three Advisory Groups (AG). The Advisory Groups (AG) will be meeting over the next coming months to help brainstorm and identify solutions brought forward from the community. The advisory groups will help provide valuable, concrete input to the project team to help draft the goals and strategies for the Comprehensive Plan.The Advisory Groups will include members of the community and Planning Commission and will receive support from city staff and outside experts in a range of applicable subjects. Each group will meet one evening each month in May, June and August, with two additional meetings tentatively planned for October 2024 and March 2025. The three Advisory Group (AG) will focus on the following areas and topics: <ul><li aria-level="1" dir="ltr">Community &amp; Quality of Life Advisory Group: This group will discuss challenges and opportunities related to public health and safety; social services; arts, parks, and recreation, sustainability, community resilience and more. Meetings will be in-person on Wednesday evenings (approx. 3 hours). The tentative dates for the first three meetings are May 29, 2024; June 26, 2024; and Aug. 28, 2024.</li><li aria-level="1" dir="ltr">Housing &amp; Economy Advisory Group: This group will discuss challenges and opportunities related to housing, land use, urban character, decarbonization, economy, workforce development and more. Meetings will be in-person on Tuesday evenings (approx. 3 hours). The tentative dates for the first three meetings are May 28, 2024; June 25, 2024; and Aug. 27, 2024.</li><li>Transportation, Green Infrastructure &amp; Systems Advisory Group: This group will discuss challenges and opportunities related to how people move or travel around the city, pedestrian and bicycle connections and safety, public infrastructure, climate adaptation and more. Meetings will be in-person on Thursday evenings (approx. 3 hours). The tentative dates for the first three meetings are May 23, 2024; June 27, 2024; and Aug. 22, 2024.</li></ul><h1>How to Apply </h1>All community members are encouraged to apply to be part of this exciting opportunity to shape the next Comprehensive Plan! <ol><li>Review the Advisory Group (AG) <a href="https://www.lakewoodtogether.org/23904/widgets/79971/documents/53321">Commitment and Expectations</a>. Comprehensive Plan Advisory Groups

Lakewood is updating the City’s Comprehensive Plan and we want to hear from you! The Comprehensive Plan is an important document that outlines a holistic, shared vision for Lakewood over the next 10-15 years. The Plan will be used by staff, City Council, Planning Commission and other boards and commissions to inform decisions about housing, transportation, climate action, parks and more in Lakewood. Throughout 2024, we will be discussing what our vision and values are for Lakewood and what challenges we need to address moving forward so that we and future generations can continue to enjoy our community and thrive. Are you concerned about hailstorms, floods, wildfires, and other extreme weather? The City of Lakewood is creating a Climate Hazard &amp; Social Vulnerability Study to be better prepared for the future.This study seeks to build from the <a href="https://www.jeffco.us/488/Hazard-Mitigation-Plan" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Jefferson County Hazard Mitigation Plan</a> with a Lakewood-specific climate hazard and vulnerability assessment and analysis, accounting for the anticipated impacts of climate change. It will evaluate the potential impacts of climate change on natural hazards that pose the greatest risks to Lakewood&rsquo;s residents, infrastructure, and economy, with particular focus on socially vulnerable communities. Climate Hazard & Social Vulnerability Study

The April 1, 2024, Lakewood City Council study session discussed the possibility of changing the default residential speed limit in Lakewood from the current 30 miles per hour. This arose after a <a href="https://www.lakewood.org/Government/Departments/City-Clerks-Office/Lakewood-Advisory-Commission" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Lakewood Advisory Commission</a> study recommended changing the residential speed limit to 20 mph. Public art provides a platform for artists, and creative expression, creates engaging experiences and contributes to the local economy. <h2 dir="ltr">Public Art in Lakewood </h2>Arts and culture are essential and integral to Lakewood. Since the public art program&rsquo;s inception in 1995, more than 50 permanent works of art have been installed across the city, while also annually exhibiting temporary sculpture through the Art on the Commons program. <div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW250918778 BCX0">The Bicycle Plan aims to provide a framework for a high-quality, safe, convenient, continuous and accessible bicycle transportation system for people of all ages and abilities while promoting bicycling as a mode of transportation that reduces carbon emissions and improves the health of community members. The plan is used by city planners and transportation staff to guide the placement and design of bike facilities during ongoing processes including development, annual street resurfacing and other capital projects, as well as to inform decisions related to pursuing grant funding for bicycle projects. </div><div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW250918778 BCX0">Why is the Bicycle Plan being updated? </div><div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW250918778 BCX0">Lakewood&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.lakewoodtogether.org/24125/widgets/80705/documents/53791">current Bicycle Plan</a> was adopted in 2018. In the six years since the plan was adopted, the active transportation landscape has changed significantly as bicycling infrastructure expands throughout the region, and national guidance is increasingly available for newer designs such as separated bike lanes. Bicycle Plan Update

Lakewood&#39;s <a class="fr-strong" href="https://www.lakewood.org/Government/Departments/Community-Resources/Parks-Forestry-and-Open-Space/A-to-Z-Park-List/Bear-Creek-Lake-Park" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Bear Creek Lake Park </a>(BCLP) is a popular 2,624-acre regional park that provides a multitude of exciting recreational opportunities outside the back door of the Denver-metro area. Park visitors may choose activities including picnicking, camping, fishing, boating, horseback riding, windsurfing, bird watching, mountain or road biking, enjoying the swim beach or taking aim at the archery range. Most importantly, the mission of Bear Creek Lake Park is environmental education and stewardship of the park&rsquo;s natural resources with many educational programs and experiences available for visitors of all ages and abilities.<img src="https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/ehq-production-us-california/bf29cf6a00f0be0a87a3ae5a2a45dbcbb865a553/original/1687292780/3958e9bd5309cbce9d8f581b526bd801_BCLP.jpg?1687292780">Bear Creek Lake ParkManaged by the City of Lakewood, the park is beginning a master plan process that will include an assessment of park visitor needs, an evaluation of park and building infrastructure, and design work for future park improvements. These will be packaged into an implementable action plan to serve visitors for the next decade. The city hired <a class="fr-strong" href="https://dhmdesign.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">DHM Design</a> to lead the projected 18-month planning effort which will include an extensive public engagement process with park visitors and stakeholders.How do you enjoy Bear Creek Lake Park? Bear Creek Lake Park master plan

Lakewood is dedicated to creating a quality, safe, convenient, continuous and accessible bicycle transportation network to support bicycling as a mode of transportation for all ages and abilities. Besides having numerous health benefits, bicycling as a mode of transportation has the potential to relieve traffic congestion, improve air quality and increase overall mobility in the community.<div class="SCXW250425104 BCX0"><div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW250425104 BCX0">What is a separated bike lane?<div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW116696586 BCX0">A separated bike lane, also known as a protected bike lane, is defined by the Federal Highway Administration as &ldquo;an exclusive facility for bicyclists that is located within or directly adjacent to the roadway and that is physically separated from motor vehicle traffic with a vertical element.&quot;  </div><div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW116696586 BCX0">Because they are physically separated from vehicular traffic, separated bike lanes can contribute to increased bicycling volumes by appealing to less-confident riders who may not feel comfortable riding a bicycle directly adjacent to a moving vehicle. They can also improve overall safety on the roadway through traffic calming effects and by increasing motorists&rsquo; awareness of the bicycle facility.</div>Next stepsLakewood is beginning the process of installing Lakewood&#39;s first separated bike lanes on South Garrison Street between Jewell and Mississippi avenues. As part of this installation, the striping pattern between Utah and Iowa avenues was changed to include a parking-protected bike lane during repaving in July 2023. The rest of the separated bike lanes will be completed in summer of 2024 with the installation of plastic curbing and posts separating the bike lanes from the rest of the road.Following the completion of the separated bike lanes on South Garrison, the next separated lanes will be installed on Denver West Parkway and a section of Harlan Street near Alameda Avenue. With the upgrade from buffered bike lanes to separated bike lanes, they will have a similar installation of plastic curbing and posts. No restriping will be necessary on either of these roads as part of this project.</div><div class="OutlineElement Ltr SCXW250425104 BCX0">A proposed network of future separated bike lanes will be developed during the 2024-25 update of Lakewood&#39;s Bicycle Plan. In addition to pursuing recommendations in the updated plan, the city will continue to evaluate locations for installing separated bike lanes during the annual street maintenance program when roads are repaved.
